Spelling and Grammar: First quarter will focus on proper Grammar Usage and understanding the Parts of Speech, in order to write a complete sentence. We will revisit these concepts throughout the year.
In second quarter, students will be introduced to spelling and vocabulary words that coincide with the topics we study in class. Learning activities will focus on different ideas to help students incorporate new words into their writing.
Writing:
We will focus on District and Common Core Arizona State Standards. Through the year students will fine-tune writing traits including Ideas, Organization, Voice, Conventions, Sentence Fluency, Presentation, and Word Choice. Pre-writing, drafting, revising, and editing writing pieces will be on-going throughout the year. Students will have the opportunity to practice their writing skills as we study an array of writing styles including; Expository, Persuasive, Letter Writing, Poetry, Personal Narrative, and Research Writing.
Reading:
Reading will focus on the elements of literature such as; Identifying Plot, Theme, Character, Point of View, Setting, Style, Mood, and Meaning of Text, within a variety of reading pieces. Students will have the opportunity to read and respond to numerous genres as well. (Examples: Fiction, Non-Fiction, Mystery, Biography, etc.)
Book Reports:
Students are asked to complete one book report per quarter, based on the genre we are studying in class. Students will be able to choose the project they would like to complete and present in class. Book reports will be presented at the end of each quarter. (More details will be discussed in class.)
Independent Reading:
In addition to the genre we are studying each quarter, students are encouraged to read a book of their choice. Every student is required to read at least 20 minutes a night, record reading minutes in his/her agenda, and have a parent sign the agenda each week.
Handwriting:
We will be introducing Handwriting throughout the year. As the year moves on, you will see handwriting practice in ELA homework packets.
